If you have a limited daily budget (e.g., $100/day), Google Ads is a race against the clock.
Most contractors I audit are losing this race every single day. Their ads turn off at 2:00 PM because the budget is exhausted. They think: "Great! I spent my budget."
I think: "You just missed the most profitable hours of the day."
📉 The "Morning Tax" Phenomenon
9:00 AM - 12:00 PM: Everyone is awake. Competitors are bidding aggressively. Office workers are searching for "kitchen remodel ideas" but are too busy to call.
Result: High CPC, Low Conversion Rate. You are paying a premium for "window shoppers."
The Data: Why 5 PM is The Golden Hour
When people get off work, they shift from "research mode" to "action mode." They get home, see the leaky faucet, and call a plumber. They sit down with their spouse to discuss the roof replacement.
If your budget runs out at 2 PM, you are literally paying for the most expensive clicks (morning) and forfeiting the cheapest conversions (evening).
Standard vs. Accelerated Delivery (RIP)
Google used to have a setting called "Accelerated Delivery" (spend as fast as possible) vs. "Standard Delivery" (pace it throughout the day).
Google removed Accelerated Delivery for most campaigns. Now, "Standard" is the default. Google tries to pace your budget, but if your budget is too small for the search volume, it will still run out early.
The Solution: "Dayparting" (Ad Schedule)
Since we can't trust Google to pace it perfectly, we must force the pacing manually. This is called Dayparting.
The Amateur Way
Run 24/7 or 8am-5pm
You treat Google Ads like your office hours. You let the budget burn out whenever it wants.
The Forensic Way
Split the Day
We lower bids by -20% in the morning (to save budget) and raise bids by +20% in the evening (to capture high-intent leads).
How to Implement This Strategy
- Check Your "Time of Day" Report: Go to Reports > Time > Hour of Day. Sort by "Cost / Conv." (CPA). Confirm that your evenings are indeed better (they usually are).
- Segment Your Schedule: In campaign settings, don't just set "Monday: 8am-8pm". Set it as two blocks: "Monday: 8am-4pm" and "Monday: 4pm-8pm".
-
Apply Bid Adjustments:
- 8am-4pm: -15% Bid Adj. (Conserve fuel)
- 4pm-8pm: +15% Bid Adj. (Burn fuel when it counts)
Conclusion
Pacing isn't just about making your budget last. It's about spending your budget when your customers are holding their credit cards, not just their coffee cups.
Stop letting the morning rush drain your wallet. Save your ammo for the evening hunt.
