Competitor Sabotage:
How to Spot (and Block) Click Fraud

It’s 7:00 AM. You check your Google Ads account. You’ve already spent $150, but you have zero leads.

If you are in a high-competition trade like Locksmithing, Towing, or Emergency Plumbing, this isn't bad luck. It's likely your competitor clicking your ads to drain your budget before the day even starts.

🕵️‍♂️

The "Click Farm" Reality

Click fraud isn't just bots. It's often "Bob the Plumber" sitting in his truck, searching for your keywords, clicking your ad, and hitting the back button. He does this 5 times, costing you $200, and it costs him $0.

3 Forensic Signs You Are Being Attacked

  • 📉 Sign #1: High CTR, Low Time-on-Site

If your Click-Through Rate (CTR) spikes to 15% (amazing!), but the average session duration is 2 seconds (terrible), someone is "bouncing" intentionally. Real customers read. Saboteurs click and leave.

  • 📍 Sign #2: The Geographic Anomaly

You service Dallas. Why are you getting 20 clicks from a single IP address in a data center in Virginia? That's a VPN or a Bot.

  • 🌙 Sign #3: The 3 AM Spike

Unless you are a 24/7 locksmith, getting 10 clicks between 3:00 AM and 3:05 AM is suspicious. Humans sleep; scripts don't.

The Manual Fix: Excluding IP Addresses

If you are on a tight budget, you can fight back manually. You need to access your server logs (or ask your web guy) to find the IP addresses that are visiting your site repeatedly without converting.

How to Block IPs in Google Ads:

  1. Go to Settings for your Campaign.
  2. Click Additional Settings (Google hides this).
  3. Select IP Exclusions.
  4. Paste the list of suspicious IP addresses.

The Automated Fix: Protection Software

Manual blocking is slow. Bob can just switch to his phone's data (new IP) and keep clicking. For serious protection, I recommend software like ClickCease or PPC Protect.

Feature Manual Blocking Software (ClickCease)
Speed Slow (Review logs weekly) Instant (Blocks in milliseconds)
VPN Detection Impossible Yes
Refund Claims You fight Google support Auto-files claims for refunds
Cost Free ~$60/month

Conclusion

You can't stop your competitors from being unethical, but you can stop paying for it.

Start by checking your "invalid clicks" column in Google Ads today. If it's high, Google is catching some of it. If it's zero, but your budget is vanishing, you are under attack.
