It’s the first of the month. You open your reports. Panic sets in.
Your Google Ads dashboard says you got 50 conversions. Your Google Analytics 4 (GA4) dashboard says you only got 32 conversions from Paid Search.
Did Google Ads invent 18 fake leads? No. The platforms aren't broken—they are just speaking different languages.
Reason 1: The "Attribution" Battle
This is the main culprit.
- Google Ads is Selfish: If someone clicks your ad on Monday, thinks about it, and buys on Friday, Google Ads says: "I did that! That's my conversion!"
- GA4 is Democratic: GA4 sees the user clicked the ad Monday, but came back via a Google Search (Organic) on Friday to buy. GA4 says: "Actually, Organic Search closed the deal."
Reason 2: The "Data Lag"
Google Ads data is almost real-time. GA4 has a processing delay.
It can take 24 to 48 hours for a conversion to fully process in GA4. If you are checking yesterday's numbers, GA4 will always look lower. Never audit GA4 data that is less than 3 days old.
The Fix: Switch to "Data-Driven" Attribution
Stop using "Last Click" attribution. It gives all the credit to the last thing the user did, ignoring your ads that started the journey.
How to Fix It in GA4:
- Go to Admin (The Gear Icon).
- Click Attribution Settings under Property Settings.
- Change Reporting Attribution Model to Data-driven.
- Scroll down and make sure "Lookback window" is set to 30 days or more.
Conclusion
Don't fire your agency because the numbers don't match.
Use Google Ads to optimize your bids (because that's where the money is spent). Use GA4 to understand the full customer journey. They are two different tools for two different jobs.
