In the world of Google Ads, "Data is King." But what if the data you are feeding the algorithm is poison?
By default, Google often counts any call as a conversion—even if it lasts 1 second. These are "Ghost Calls." They are wrong numbers, pocket dials, or immediate hang-ups.
When you tell Google these are "conversions," Google's AI says: "Great! I will find you more people who hang up immediately!"
(Learns Pattern)
The 60-Second Rule
A real lead needs time to talk. They need to explain their problem ("My roof is leaking") and ask for availability. This takes at least 60 seconds.
Anything less than 60 seconds is likely:
- ❌ "Sorry, wrong number."
- ❌ "Do you sell pizza?" (Solicitation)
- ❌ *Silence* (Robocall)
The Fix: Edit Your Conversion Settings
You must manually change the definition of a "Call Conversion" inside Google Ads. Do not accept the default.
Advanced: Layering CallRail
If you use CallRail, you can get even more granular. You can set up a rule:
"Only count as a conversion if Duration > 60s AND Keyword spoken includes 'Appointment' or 'Quote'."
This is the ultimate filter. But for most businesses, simply moving the threshold to 60 seconds in Google Ads is 80% of the battle won.
Conclusion
Don't let vanity metrics fool you. 100 calls means nothing if 50 of them were 3 seconds long.
Tighten your conversion criteria. Force Google to work harder to find you conversations, not just connections.
