Imagine walking into a gas station. You pay $4.00 per gallon. The guy next to you pays $2.50 per gallon for the exact same fuel.
Unfair? Maybe. But this is exactly how Google Ads works. Google charges you based on your Quality Score (QS).
If your Quality Score is high (10/10), you can bid LESS and still rank HIGHER than a competitor with a low score.
The "Google Tax" vs. "Google Discount"
Google's algorithm is simple: They want to show users relevant ads. If your ad is relevant, they reward you with a discount. If your ad is trash, they fine you.
You pay half.
You pay market rate.
You pay 4x more.
The 3 Levers of Quality Score
How do you get a 10/10? You need to optimize three things. But they are NOT equal.
- Expected CTR (The Big Boss): This accounts for ~60% of your score. Google asks: "Do people actually click this?" High CTR = High QS.
- Ad Relevance: Does your ad copy match the user's search term exactly?
- Landing Page Experience: Does your page load fast? Does it have the same keywords as the ad?
The Fix: "Granular" Ad Groups
Most contractors make one giant ad group called "Services" and dump 50 keywords in it: plumbing, water heater, leak detection, drain cleaning.
Then they write one generic ad: "Best Plumber in Town. Call Us."
This destroys your relevance. If I search for "Water Heater Repair", I don't want to see "Best Plumber". I want to see "Water Heater Repair".
How to Instantly Boost QS
The Strategy: 1 Ad Group = 1 Theme
Break your "Plumbing" campaign into tiny ad groups:
- Group A: Keyword "Water Heater" -> Ad Headline "Water Heater Repair"
- Group B: Keyword "Leak Detection" -> Ad Headline "Leak Detection Experts"
- Group C: Keyword "Drain Cleaning" -> Ad Headline "Clogged Drain Fixed"
Conclusion
Quality Score is not a vanity metric. It is a discount code.
Every point you increase your QS is money you take directly out of Google's pocket and put back into yours. Stop being lazy with your ad structure.
