You are paying Google thousands of dollars. Are you sure they are counting correctly?
In 80% of the accounts I audit, I find tracking errors. Usually, it's double-counting (inflating your results) or missing conversions (making you pause winning ads).
You don't need to be a coder to check this. You just need 10 minutes and this checklist.
The 3-Point Forensic Checklist
Check for "Double Tagging"
Open your website. Click the Tag Assistant icon. Do you see the same Google Ads ID (e.g., AW-12345) listed twice? Or a Global Site Tag AND a GTM container firing the same pixel?
The Fix: Remove the hardcoded tags if you are using GTM.Verify "Verified" Status
Go to Google Ads > Tools > Measurement > Conversions. Look at the "Tracking Status" column. If it says "Unverified", your tag is broken or on the wrong page.
The Fix: Visit the "Thank You" page yourself to trigger the tag.The "One-Per-Click" Rule
Click on your "Submit Lead Form" conversion action. Check the setting "Count". For leads, it should be "One". If it is set to "Every", you are counting duplicates (e.g., if a user reloads the thank you page).
The Fix: Change setting to "One" for lead gen.The "Real World" Test
The only way to be 100% sure is to spend money.
- Search for your own brand name on Google.
- Click your own ad. (Yes, it costs $5. It is worth it for the audit).
- Fill out your form as a test user.
- Wait 24 hours. Check Google Ads. Did "Conversions" go up by exactly 1?
Conclusion
If your tracking is broken, your optimization is broken. You are bidding up the wrong keywords and bidding down the winners.
