Detroit Locksmith:
Rich in Clicks, Poor in Calls
50,000 Impressions looked amazing on paper. But you can't pay rent with "Views." How we uncovered the $2,500 illusion.
The "Vanity Metric" Illusion
"Wow! Everyone is seeing my ad!"
(False sense of success)
The Real Problem:
Curious clickers, not customers.
The client was confident because the Google Ads dashboard was full of green arrows. Views were up. Clicks were up. But the phone wasn't ringing. He was paying for "Curiosity," not "Urgency."
My Audit: 4 Ways Data Lied to You
1. Chasing the Wrong Scoreboard
You were celebrating "Page Views" like they were sales. A user looking for "How to pick a lock" might click your ad out of curiosity, read your blog, and leave. Google charges you for that click. You paid for a hobbyist, not a homeowner locked out in the snow.
2. The "Double-Count" Glitch
Your website code was counting everything as a win. If a user refreshed the page? +1 View. If they clicked the menu? +1 Conversion. Your data was inflated by 300%.
Exclude Refreshes
Must Stay > 10s
Call > 30s Only
3. The "Mixed Bag" Ad Groups
You lumped "Commercial Security" (High Value) with "Car Key Copy" (Low Value). You couldn't tell which one was wasting money, so you kept funding both equally.
| Your Old Setup | Result | The Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Any Page View = Conversion | Inflated Data | Only "Submit Success" page counts. |
| 1-Second Call = Lead | Wasted Ad Spend | Only calls > 60 seconds count. |
The Fix: Cleaning the Data
We stopped optimizing for "Clicks" and started optimizing for "Revenue."
We rewrote the tracking code. Now, a "Conversion" only fires if a user fills out the form AND reaches the "Thank You" page, or stays on the phone for more than 45 seconds.
Split campaigns into "Residential," "Auto," and "Commercial." We instantly saw that "Auto" was generating clicks but no money, so we cut its budget by 50%.
Changed ads from "Learn about Locks" to "Locked Out? We arrive in 20 mins." This repelled the hobbyists and attracted the emergencies.
The Results (Month 2)
The "Vanity" numbers went down. The bank account went up.
Are Your Ad Reports Lying to You?
It feels good to see 50,000 views. It feels terrible to see $0 in the bank. Many Detroit locksmiths fall for this trap—paying Google for popularity instead of profitability.
I can audit your account to separate the "Vanity Metrics" from the "Money Metrics." I'll fix your tracking code so you stop paying for accidental clicks and start paying for real phone calls. You unlock the doors; I'll unlock the data.
